With short notice, a beach and underwater clean up were organised and one with the help of some local youngsters and guests who were staying with us at Maalhos. We do cleanups whenever we can but this time it was done to mark Earth Day as well as support the Earth Day clean up initiative by Scuba Schools International Maldives.
A reef area of roughly 50m by 150m was cleaned, from the beach line to the reef edge to a depth of 8m. A section of the beach, from the shoreline to the vegetation belt was cleaned as well.
About 150m along the shoreline to the beach vegetation line. We reused bags from a local construction site and battery powered transportation was used on our clean up.
During the night, after dinner we watched the final episode of the Blue Planet 2 documentary which highlights the threat’s to our ocean and how we can prevent them, followed by a small discussion amongst everybody.
We can keep cleaning but also it’s time to better educate and understand
