Dive for Earth Day 2007
4/22/07
|
115 Divers from 11 dive centers gathered at Old Shark Point, North Male’ Atoll to Dive for Earth Day which is the 22nd of April. The activity held was an underwater clean up of the dive point.
The dive boats started gathering there at 9 45. After signing in at the logistics launch the dive began. A total of 85 bags of garbage were taken that day. Old Shark Point, which is a part of the outside reef of Thilafushi has a considerable amount of trash on it. This could be due to careless boaters, fisherman and Thilafushi itself.
Apart from the underwater clean up awareness program was held for school goers. More than 60 students from several schools were given presentations status of our environment on climate change and protecting out environment.
Dive for Earth Day 2007 was exclusively sponsored by Dive Shop, the sole distributors of Scuba Pro and Uwatec in Maldives. The event was supported by PADI project AWARE and the Ministry of Environment Energy and Water.
Earth Day began in the United States on 22 April 1970 to raise the status of environment issues to the global stage. Thousands of divers in more than 115 countries participated in the Dive for Earth Day throughout the world.
The participating organizations were Maldivers Diving Center, Planeta Divers, Divers Lodge, Sea Explorers Associates, Ocean Diving Desk, Vadoo Diving Club, Dive Center Laguna, Bolifushi Diving Center, Multi Marine Services, Coast Guard and the Banyan Tree Marine Center.
We in the Maldives are facing numerous environmental problems. We need to act before its too late!
Thank you to all the participants of Dive for Earth Day.
